237 Pathfinders from the Georgia-Cumberland Conference participated in the annual Precision Drill Team Day held at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., on March 16.
At the event, teams don’t compete against each other, but rather against a point system. Each team starts with 500 points and if they do something incorrectly or leave out an element of the routine, points are deducted. All the teams that stay above a certain point level are awarded first, second, or third place and all participants receive a metal.
The Pathfinders competed in two rounds at the Precision Drill Team Day. Compulsories came first, which included a list of required formations that had to be completed in a certain order. The second half of the day was Free Style. During this part, the teams are free to come up with whatever marching routines they want. The judges are looking mostly for creativity and how well the put it together.
The teams are categorized by small and large teams for the event. First place awards for the small team division went to Kingsport, Tenn.; Douglasville, Ga.; McDonald Road-A, Tenn.; Atlanta Metro; and Bowman Hills, Tenn. For the large teams, first place awards were given to Chattanooga Community Hispanic, Tenn.; Murphy, N.C.; and Atlanta North Hispanic.
Now, although Conyers came in third place, the pathfinders were excited just by being there. The Georgia-Cumberland Conference Pathfinder Drill Master says, “I am encouraged by the dedication and the hard work of the Pathfinders and drill instructors who prepare for the event. By the results, it is obvious that they have worked hard.”
